Fuel card providers play a pivotal role by offering streamlined ways for businesses to control expenses and monitor fuel consumption. Behind the scenes, though, some providers engage in underhand practices that compromise the trust of the businesses they serve and raise serious ethical concerns.
At Driving Down we are transparent about our prices and how we compare to the rest of the market. We publish our prices each week and provide a market comparison tool to help you see how we compare to your current provider. Here are some of the issues in the fuel card industry, what they could mean for your business, and why we believe real transparency and ethical practice matter.
Opaque pricing
One prevalent practice is the use of opaque pricing models. Some providers offer seemingly attractive rates at first glance but fail to disclose hidden fees and surcharges. That lack of transparency can lead to unexpected financial burdens for businesses that rely on fuel cards for budgeting and cost control.
Our top tip: ask your fuel card provider for clear details of their current pricing structure, with all associated costs itemised. How does that compare to what you signed up to?
Misleading marketing and promotions
Another concerning practice is misleading marketing, where providers exaggerate price reductions without a clear explanation of the terms and conditions. Businesses often decide based on these materials, only to find the actual benefits fall short.
Eight weeks before this article was written, a UK fuel card provider was advertising prices 10p below the Platts price at the time. One of their customers then contacted us because they felt the deal was no longer competitive. In the short time since signing up, their prices had risen by an average of 2p to 3p every week. The price they were paying was 5% above the average pump price, well above the deal advertised.
Unauthorised charges and hidden penalties
Some providers impose unauthorised charges and hidden penalties on clients. These can include dormant account fees, inactivity charges, premium product fees, admin charges and many other costs for services that were not clearly communicated when the card was taken out. Hidden penalties cause financial strain and frustration, and undermine trust between provider and client. At Driving Down, all of the charges you may incur are made very clear up front.
Poor customer support
Customer support is a cornerstone of customer satisfaction. Many fuel card providers run inadequate or unresponsive support that makes it really difficult for you to find out what is happening on your account. Knowing that many business owners do not have the time to chase small queries, some providers are left free to keep increasing the prices you pay. Unresolved queries and delayed responses disrupt business operations and sour how you feel about the fuel card sector. Our support is robust, efficient and responsive because we want to maintain the trust of our clients, and we work hard to give them a positive experience.
Why it matters
Underhand practices have far-reaching consequences, including financial losses, frustrated clients and damage to the industry's reputation as a whole. By adhering to ethical business conduct, fuel card providers can improve trust, transparency and the overall client experience.
At Driving Down we understand the need for clear and honest pricing models, transparent marketing, fair penalty structures, responsive customer support and easily understood terms and conditions. In an industry where efficiency and cost control are paramount, ethical practice is the foundation on which we have built our business, and it has led to our long-term success and our customers' satisfaction.
With that in mind we have produced our own app so that you can compare your prices to the average pump price, and to what you could be paying if you joined Driving Down. Check it out here.
